El Partido por la Democracia (PPD) se funda el 15 de diciembre de 1987 como una organización política instrumental cuyo objetivo fundamental era terminar con el régimen militar y alcanzar nuevamente la democracia en Chile por medios políticos y pacíficos. Fue fundado por Ricardo Lagos, Jorge Schaulsohn y otros dirigentes políticos provenientes del socialismo, radicalismo y otras vertientes políticas de izquierda, centro y desde el liberalismo. El PPD se autodefine de izquierda, democrático y progresista
